Growing up in the rural flat lands of Carrollton, Illinois, Jamie Benoist found adventure and imagination within the woods and cornfields that bordered his childhood. In the corn lived the infinite possibilities that defined the world he lived in. While he would stand there amid the vastness and gaze down those narrow rows, he often contemplated the possibility that he was not alone. Amongst the trees that climbed skyward and weaved themselves together, he found safety in the traps and shelters he created.
Jamie would create elaborate narratives and immerse himself in them, often performing them alone in the surroundings he drew inspiration from. Eventually, his tales would no longer die in the woods, but would live their lives on paper in the form of crudely drawn characters. His love for drawing continued to grow throughout his life, and in 2003 he enrolled at The Illinois Institute of Art- Schaumburg, with a focus on 2D animation. There his storytelling gained a new life and complexness that could only be expressed sequentially.
In 2009 an adventure lead Jamie to California. While exploring the steeps of San Francisco, he caught a glimpse of contemporary art and culture that was previously unknown to him. Obsessed about becoming a part of this newly discovered world and with no outlet to feed his hunger, he taught himself to paint.
Today, Jamie Benoist hails from San Jose, California. Often trapped in his own thoughts, his narrative is played out through his oil paintings.
Several of his works can be found in the homes of private collectors.
